| Notes: | The birthdate listed on Maudie's death certificate is not physically possible, given the birthdate of her older sister, Maryann. Betty James Smith's information gave 3 Aug 1882; however, this file uses the dates found in census records. Maudie is listed in the 1885 Florida Census as "Venadia," age 3, born in Alabama -- however, the volunteer transcriptionists of this census clearly state that the census is less than accurate. Maudie married William Mann before her 20th birthday. They were married in Jackson County, Florida on May 14, 1899. (The marriage is indexed online as Wm C Mann and Mandie Jane White.) The 1900 Census is the first with William and Maud as a family. The couple were renting a home in Graceville, Jackson County, having been married only a year. William was making a living as a woodcutter. Their first child had already been born and died. According to family legend, upon Cora's birth, William Mann took the couple's first two daughters and left. William had thought Cora would be a boy, and worried that he'd have a harder time caring for a boy. At the enumeration of the 1920 Census, in January, Maude was married to William Bishop. Their children, Cora and Annie, lived with them. Bill was not Cora's birth father, and he appears to have informally adopted her, although it is doubtful whether any legal paperwork had been done. In the Spring of 1930, Maudie was caring for the Bishop boys, J.C. and Johnny, and the 17-year-old daughter Anniebell had married, but was still living at home. The menfolk were nowhere to be found, so the womenfolk supported the household by doing odd jobs. Maudie was 48. Maudie died in Chipley twenty years later of paresis, or slight paralysis. She had also developed heart disease (endocarditis). Her step-son (?), J.C. Bishop, gave her place of birth as Jackson County, Florida. J.C. lived in Limona at the time. Maudie was buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Jackson County, Florida, with her mother, father, stepfather, and one of her daughters. She was 70 years old. |
